Jharkhand faces 10% rainfall deficit as monsoon weakens

Jamshedpur. Sep 1: The monsoon season has weakened over the past two days, leading to a 10% deficit in rainfall across Jharkhand. As of August 31, the state has received 718 mm of rain against the expected 798 mm. This shortfall has raised concerns about water availability and agricultural impact.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi and other districts are expected to experience heavy rain with thunderstorms until September 6. Despite this forecast, the monsoon has been notably weak, with rainfall occurring mainly in isolated areas. The highest rainfall recorded was 12.5 mm in Dumri, Giridih, while the highest temperature reached 35.7°C in Babanagari, Deoghar. Ranchi recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 23.4°C.

A depression forming in southern Odisha and adjoining regions has moved northwards but is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area within 24 hours. Abhishek Anand, head of the Ranchi-based weather centre, noted that the monsoon trough currently extends from Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan to the Bay of Bengal.

Meteorologists advise the public to stay alert as rain and thunder are forecasted for September 2. Residents should seek shelter, avoid trees and electric poles, and farmers should stay out of fields during adverse weather conditions. The maximum temperature may drop by 2-3°C over the next few days, with no significant change expected afterward. The IMD predicts thunderstorms and rain in various parts of Jharkhand through September 3.
