Ranchi: As the Election Commission of India counted votes for the Jharkhand Assembly elections on November 23, early trends indicate the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) crossing the halfway mark. Chief Minister Hemant Soren led from the Barhait constituency, while his wife Kalpana Soren trailed in Gandey. Elections for all 81 assembly seats were conducted in two phases on November 13 and 20, with an overall voter turnout of 67.74 percent. The second phase recorded a slightly higher turnout of 68.95 percent.
Key candidates in the fray included Chief Minister Hemant Soren, BJP’s Babulal Marandi, and AJSU leader Sudesh Mahto. While Marandi expressed confidence in the NDA securing over 51 seats, Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir projected a victory for the JMM-led alliance, claiming they would win over 50 percent of the seats.
The political landscape in Jharkhand has been eventful in recent years. Hemant Soren’s tenure saw turbulence, including his resignation and subsequent jail time. During his absence, Champai Soren took over as interim chief minister, only to later switch allegiance to the BJP, Jharkhand’s principal opposition party.
In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP faced a significant defeat despite a strong Modi wave, winning only 25 seats. The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance, on the other hand, secured 47 seats, forming a majority government. This outcome marked a major shift in the state’s political dynamics.
This year’s assembly elections witnessed a fierce battle between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the INDIA bloc, comprising the JMM, Congress, RJD, and CPI(ML). The BJP contested 68 seats, with its allies AJSU, JD(U), and LJP (Ram Vilas) contesting 10, two, and one seat respectively. Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc fielded JMM candidates in 41 seats, Congress in 30, RJD in six, and CPI(ML) in four.
Prominent leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president JP Nadda, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi actively campaigned to sway voters. Key issues during the campaign included tribal rights, immigration, and allegations of corruption.
