Jewellery worth ₹1.57 crore seized at Tatanagar Station released to traders 

Jamshedpur: Jewellery worth approximately ₹1.57 crore, seized from the Tatanagar railway station last month, was handed over to jewellery traders on Monday following an investigation and evaluation by the GST department and other officials.

The incident occurred in the early hours of October 27, when a flying squad and Railway Protection Force (RPF) team from the Chakradharpur division stopped a man, identified as BN Jha, a resident of Jugsalai, on suspicion. Upon searching his bag, authorities recovered a significant consignment of jewellery, including gold, silver, platinum, diamonds, and idols.

Following the seizure, the consignment was weighed and evaluated by GST officials, who confirmed its value at ₹1.57 crore. The matter prompted intervention from the Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), which requested the East Singhbhum Assortment Law and Penitentiary Committee to release the confiscated goods. After a thorough investigation, officials cleared the consignment and released it to the traders on Monday.

The incident has underscored the importance of compliance with tax and documentation requirements. Both the GST department and the RPF have advised businesspersons to carry proper documentation, including tax-related certificates, while transporting goods. In the absence of valid documents, confiscation and legal action may be taken.

This development highlights the administration’s vigilance in ensuring security and adherence to tax compliance laws. The prompt action by authorities also reflects the seriousness with which such matters are addressed in the interest of maintaining regulatory standards.
