Jamshedpur: Consumers of Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL, formerly known as JUSCO, in Jamshedpur and adjoining areas will now have to bear a higher electricity burden following the implementation of revised power tariffs approved by the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission (JSERC).
The revised rates have come into effect from April 1, 2026, and consumers will witness the impact in the electricity bills issued for May.
Around 59,000 Consumers to Be Affected
According to official information, nearly 51,000 consumers in the Jamshedpur command area and more than 8,000 consumers in the Adityapur region will now pay electricity charges based on the revised tariff structure.
Tata Steel has increased electricity charges by up to 50 paise per unit, along with a hike of up to ₹50 in fixed charges. In the UISL service area, electricity rates have been increased by 15 paise per unit.
Three Relief Measures for Consumers
Despite the increase in tariffs, consumers have been provided certain relief measures by the Regulatory Commission.
200 Units Free Electricity Scheme Continues
Consumers covered under the Jharkhand Government’s scheme providing 200 units of free electricity will continue to receive the same benefit. Around 10,000 consumers are expected to remain unaffected by the hike under this scheme.
3 Percent Discount for Prepaid Meter Users
Consumers using prepaid electricity meters will receive a 3 percent discount on their total electricity bills. The move has been introduced to promote advanced and digital payments.
Hike Restricted to 4.74 Percent
Power distribution companies had reportedly proposed a tariff hike of more than 12 percent. However, after conducting public hearings, JSERC restricted the effective increase to 4.74 percent.
Consumers Being Informed Through Bills and Messages
Tata Steel and UISL have started informing consumers regarding the revised tariff structure. A “Rate Revision Slip” is being issued along with April electricity bills.
Apart from this, information regarding the revised rates is also being shared with registered consumers through WhatsApp messages and SMS notifications.
