Jawan injured in IED blast during anti-Naxal operation in Jharkhand’s Chaibasa

Jamshedpur: A Jharkhand Jaguar constable, Manoj Kumar Damai , was seriously injured this morning after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Naxalites exploded during a defusal attempt in the dense forest area under the jurisdiction of Chotanagra and Geraikela Police Stations in West Singhbhum.

The explosion occurred around 10:45 AM while security forces were actively working to detect and defuse IEDs planted in the area. Damai , who was part of the advance team securing the region, sustained injuries to his right leg. Immediate first aid was administered on-site, and he was airlifted by helicopter to Ranchi for advanced treatment, thanks to swift coordination between the Jharkhand Police Headquarters and CRPF Sector Headquarters. His condition is reported to be stable.

In a major, ongoing anti-Naxal operation, security forces in West Singhbhum have launched an extensive drive across the forested and hilly terrains of the Chaibasa region. The operation is being led by the Jharkhand Police, in close collaboration with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and elite Jharkhand Jaguar units, and reflects the state’s unwavering commitment to eliminate left-wing extremism from its core-affected areas.

Launched on March 4, 2025, the operation is concentrated around Chotanagra and Jhikpani Police Station limits—identified as highly sensitive and Naxal-affected zones. The campaign seeks to dismantle Naxalite infrastructure, restrict their mobility, and restore security in the vulnerable tribal and forest communities.

The operation is spearheaded by senior officers of West Singhbhum police, supported by various police station heads and local leaders from Mawasi, Chaibasa, Manoharpur, Goilkera, Sonua, Bandgaon, Faitu, and Panu. This strategic joint mobilisation underscores the synergy between local administration and security forces in combating extremist threats.

Forces deployed include multiple battalions of the Jharkhand Jaguar, CRPF (26, 60, 134, 174, 193, and 197 BN), and specialised CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) units—203 and 209 BN—renowned for their jungle warfare expertise. These units are conducting coordinated patrols, surveillance missions, and targeted IED defusal operations in high-risk zones.

Despite the IED incident, security agencies have reiterated their steadfast commitment to the mission. The injured constable’s quick evacuation and treatment demonstrate the operational preparedness and resilience of the deployed forces.

“The anti-Naxal campaign is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with intensified combing operations, community outreach, and mine-detection efforts, aimed at reclaiming territory and ensuring lasting peace for the region’s residents,” said an official.
