Eastern India’s first “Glass View” homes of Gharial and Marsh crocodile opens in Jamshedpur
Jamshedpur, Jan 8: Tata Steel Zoological Park today added new homes for Gharials and Crocodiles making the facilities more interesting for the visitors in the New Year. The enclosures were inaugurated today by Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel & President of Tata Steel Zoological Society in the presence of other distinguished guests.

The new homes are constructed considering all required parameters for animal welfare as per their biological needs such as sufficient basking area, water body, segregation pond for sick/new arrivals, hatchling care pond including water filtration unit.

Gharial pond is 300 square meter and capacity to hold 7.5 lakh litres of water while the size of Mugger (Marsh crocodile) pond is 320 square meter with water holding capacity of 3.2 lakh litres.
After Green Zoo, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, Jamnagar, Gujarat; Tata Steel Zoological Park is the second facility in India where a water filtration plant (system) is installed in the Gharial and Crocodile Homes/Enclosures.
Moreover, for the first time in the Eastern region, the people of Jamshedpur will enjoy the “Glass View” homes/enclosures of Gharial and Marsh crocodiles.
Visitors can also enjoy the group of gharials with the new arrival of a pair of Gharials from North Bengal Wild Animal Park, Siliguri. Earlier in the year 1997, four Gharial and two Marsh Crocodiles were acquired from Nandankanan Zoological Park, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.
Spread over 60 acres of land, Tata Steel Limited conceptualized the creation of a Zoo in 1992 in Jamshedpur as an endeavour to raise people’s awareness on the need to conserve forests and wildlife in the Singhbhum landscape.
