Jamshedpur, April 13: A case of cyber fraud worth Rs 1.88 lakh came to light in the city on Wednesday. The victim, identified as a resident of Sidhgora, has registered a complaint against the unknown fraud with the Bistupur cyber police station .
According to the complaint, the victim received a message claiming that her electricity bill payments were not updated. A mobile number was given in the message. On calling the number, the victim was contacted by an unknown person claiming to be an employee of the electricity department. The accused asked the victim to download R Cube App on her mobile and thereafter log into her internet banking account. No sooner did the victim log in, the accused withdrew Rs 1.88 lakh from her account.
Police officials said the cyber criminals are trapping gullible citizens by sending them fake messages regarding unpaid electricity bills and then asking them to download certain apps on their mobile phones. Such apps enable the frauds to remote control the mobile phone of their targets, said cops.
