Female elephant dies falling into well in Noamundi

A female elephant died on Wednesday after falling into an abandoned irrigation well in Sindri Gui Tola village.
The accident occurred late at night while a herd of 22 elephants traversed standing paddy fields.
Loud trumpeting echoed across the hamlet as the herd attempted to rescue the trapped animal.
Panicked villagers remained inside their homes throughout the night to avoid potential aggression from the herd.
Residents discovered the carcass the following morning and immediately alerted local forest officials.
A response team led by Forester Alok Kumar arrived shortly after to begin recovery operations.
Heavy rainfall, deep mud, and poor road access severely hindered the early rescue efforts.
Officials deployed two heavy JCB machines to pull the heavy carcass out of the deep well.
Crews finally extracted the dead elephant late in the evening after hours of continuous effort.
A dispute quickly erupted between local residents and forest officials regarding the burial location.
Villagers demanded officials transport the body far away to prevent attracting the roaming herd back.
Residents feared further destruction of their paddy crops and heightened risks to personal safety.
Nightfall prevented officials from loading the elephant onto a dumper, leaving the burial unresolved.
Forest Ranger Jitendra Prasad Singh confirmed the herd had entered the fields to feed on crops.
Veterinarians will perform a post-mortem examination early Thursday morning to determine the official cause of death.
Officials will take further action following the completion of the medical report and formal guidelines.
The fatal incident highlights rising human-elephant conflicts and habitat fragmentation across the Noamundi region.
