Jamshedpur: Will Ram Chandra Sahis be repeated or NDA will explore new face against Mangal Kalindi

Jamshedpur: With election fever mounting, the race for Jugsalai — a pivotal battleground after Jamshedpur East and West — has entered a thrilling phase, with every passing day adding to the suspense. While the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) appears to have the upper hand in this crucial constituency, known for its blend of rural and urban voters, the party is on the verge of locking in its candidate.

JMM will possibly set its sight once again on Mangal Kalindi, the man who stunned political heavyweights in 2019 by defeating the sitting MLA Ram Chandra Sahis of the All Jharkhand Students Union – Party (AJSU), and the BJP’s Mochi Ram Bauri. As the NDA scrambles to finalize its candidate, Kalindi is already preparing for what could be a tough and intense fight.

The Jugsalai constituency is uniquely positioned, with its voters straddling both in rural and urban areas. Political leaders have to traverse Jamshedpur East or West just to reach them —a logistical challenge that often makes it difficult for campaigns to hit their mark.

The NDA, meanwhile, is in disarray, torn between a pool of potential candidates, including young firebrand Bimal Baitha, and former MLA Mochi Ram Bauri. Insiders state that Bimal Baitha might just be the party’s secret weapon to defeat Kalindi as his popularity has soared among both rural and urban voters in past one decade due to his active social and political activities in the constituency.

Adding to the mix, the BJP has rekindled its pre-poll alliance with AJSU, throwing former MLA Ram Chandra Sahis back into the fray as a strong contender. The stakes are high.

But Mangal Kalindi remains a formidable force. Known for his integrity and close connection with voters, Kalindi’s 2019 victory was nothing short of a political earthquake. He not only crushed BJP’s Mochi Ram Bauri by a staggering margin of 21,934 votes but also pushed Sahis, the former MLA, to third place.

Political experts say that Jugsalai is no stranger to surprises. Traditionally a BJP stronghold, Sahis had clinched the seat in 2014 only because of the BJP-AJSU alliance. When that partnership dissolved in 2019, both parties crumbled, allowing Kalindi to seize the moment. Now, with the alliance back on the table, could Sahis stage a comeback, or will the BJP throw its weight behind the rising star, Baitha?

Singhbhum Chambers of Commerce (SCC) vice president Anil Modi said, “It is party’s internal matter. We will vote for the right candidate.”

A local BJP leader Ram Singh Munda said, “Alliance is fixed. Whoever the senior leaders of NDA decide we will support him or her.”

As the clock ticks down to election day, the drama is just getting started.
