Jamshedpur: Vitiligo Day observed at MGMCH

Jamshedpur, June 25: World Vitiligo Day was celebrated at MGM Medical College Hospital on Saturday, June 25. This year the theme for World Vitiligo Day is ‘Empowering people with vitiligo’.

According to experts, vitiligo is not contagious. In such a case, the disease does not spread through the affected patients’ touching, eating, drinking, blood, or sex.

Detailed discussion was held with patients and information was shared about its treatment.

Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) Jharkhand President and Head of Department of Skin, Dr. AN Jha said that skin provides beauty as well as protection.

According to survey, one percent of the world’s population suffers from Vitiligo.

There are many misconceptions about ‘leucoderma’ or ‘white leprosy , while the truth is that this disease is neither hereditary nor contagious but it is autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy cells which produces pigment, causing tissue damage. Melanocytes are the cells that produce the skin pigment melanin, which gives your skin its color; when melanocytes die, white patches appear.

Vitiligo is a relatively simple clinical diagnosis. The diagnosis is based on the typical distribution pattern of the skin lesions, which are hypopigmented, non-scaly, chalky white macules with distinct margins. https://imasdk.googleapis.com/js/core/bridge3.519.0_en.html#goog_856881848
