Jamshedpur: In order to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections, the District Election Officer (DEO) Ananya Mittal addressed a comprehensive training program for Assistant Returning Officers (ARO), Zonal Officers, and Sector Officers at the Michael John Auditorium in Bistupur. Emphasizing the importance of accountability, Mittal stated that “Conducting fair, independent, and transparent elections is our top priority,” and urged officials to perform their roles with diligence throughout the election process.
During the training, participants were briefed on their responsibilities, which extend from EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) receipt before polling day to their collection after voting concludes. Mittal highlighted the Sector Officers’ critical role as a communication link between the polling parties and AROs/ROs. He emphasized the importance of a strong understanding of access routes, physical verification of polling centers, EVM and VVPAT handling, adherence to the Model Code of Conduct, and maintenance of law and order.
Sector Officers were instructed to promptly visit their assigned polling centers to gain full familiarity with the voting area, access routes, and EVM operation without hesitation. They were also advised to monitor their sectors for compliance with the Model Code of Conduct, particularly watching for unauthorized campaign vehicles, misuse of government resources, and defacement of public or private property.
“The Sector Officer is responsible not only for ensuring smooth operations on voting day but also for instilling confidence in voters from vulnerable areas by addressing any concerns about their safety and security,” Mittal added. Officers were also encouraged to educate voters about the use of EVMs, polling booth locations, helpline support, and ensuring a voting experience free from fear or coercion.
Master trainers provided detailed guidance on the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) protocols, reinforcing the importance of vigilance and caution throughout the election period. Sector Officers were reminded of their responsibilities in sensitive areas and urged to consult with local law enforcement as needed to maintain order and prevent potential disputes on voting day.
Also in attendance were Executive Magistrate Mrityunjay Kumar, Executive Officer of the District Council Dr. Rajnikant Mishra, and other senior officials who supported the training by sharing insights and emphasizing the need for heightened attention to vulnerable areas based on previous experiences.
