Jamshedpur, July 7: Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy paid a surprise inspection visit to Sidhgora Transport Basti on Thursday and found that hundreds of vehicles belonging to Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee were lying abandoned.

Roy said there are over 50 buses purchased by Jharkhand government way back in 2008 that are rusting and gathering dust in the Transport Basti. “These buses were purchased to provide transportation facility to city residents. JNAC had spent over Rs 50 lakh on the repair of these buses. Only half a dozen of these buses plied on road for two to four months and have now been reduced to scrap. They can only be sold as scrap,” said Roy.

According to the MLA, many vehicles purchased by the government for collecting garbage from households five to seven years ago are also lying defunct. “When asked, the JNAC Special Officer Krishna Kumar said many of these vehicles were brought from funds under the 15th Finance Commission,” said the legislator.

Roy said the JNAC is about to get allotment for purchasing more vehicles. He said the state government should first prepare a plan for the upkeep and repair of vehicles before purchasing them. He further said that the drivers should be recruited and allotments should be made for filling fuel in the vehicles. Parking facility is also a must for the vehicles, he said.

“The JNAC has no parking space for these vehicles. The authorities have simply dumped all these vehicles in Sidhgora Transport Basti. The transport department should transfer this land to urban development department so that the vehicles may be used for the public by linking them to Sidhgora Town Hall,” said Roy.
