Jamshedpur, March 24: A group of 40 students from Rajendra Vidyalaya, Jamshedpur accompanied by four teachers Neena Sinha, Mithu Ganguly, Mitali Bose, and Ratnesh Kumar visited CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur and interacted with scientists and research scholars this morning under the aegis of “School-NML Interactive Programme”. The objective of this programme is to provide exposure to the research environment and simultaneously motivate towards science and further encouraged them to pursue a career in the science stream in near future. The students were thrilled to visit the laboratory and interact with the working group.
The programme was scheduled for three hours, which includes CSIR and NML, a documentary film show and laboratory visits. Dr.P.N. Mishra, Sr. Principal Scientist delivered a welcome address and brief up about the programme, introduced team members to students and accompanying faculties. He discussed the contribution of CSIR to the nation. Further talked about NML and its various R&D division and how NML pursues research for the benefit of industries in the particular and common man in generals. The students expressed their feelings, asked a number of questions and clarify their doubts.
Further, a laboratory visit programme was arranged by Dr. Mishra & Shri S.N. Hembram, Sr. Principal Technical officer to visit the Materials Testing & Evaluation Division, Analytical Chemistry Centre, Electronic Waste Units and Museums.
Mohit Kumar, Std.XII expressed that the lab. the visit helped him to get new knowledge about natural resources like minerals, ores and different types of metals. Ansh, Palchhin Jyoti, Kudip Sen and Ms Anshika of Std. X and Ms Harshita, Std.XII has also expressed a similar view.
Pakhi Prerna, Std.XII was impressed by the explanation and discussion with the deputed scientist on corrosion protection of metals and the product developed at NML to prevent discoloring of metals due to long exposures in the environment. Dr A.K. Mohanty, Principal Scientist explained nicely about corrosion prevention and coatings products available in the market.
Protyush Rathore, Anshul Pandey, Nandini Jha. of Std. X and Ms. Lavanya Pranee of Std.XII was astonished to know about the E-Waste unit and its contribution to the extraction of metals from different types of electronic appliances. Dr. Manish Kumar Jha, Sr. Principal Scientist has discussed in detail and also respond to the queries raised by the students.
The knowledge about MTE Division was imparted Dr. Avijit Kumar Metya, Principal Scientist explained the fatigue, creep, fractures prevailing in different types of industrial components like boiler, reformer tubes, pressure vessels etc. Students get exposure to different machines like Servo Hydro Testing Machine, Servo Electrical Machine and furnace.
Sudh Jha and Leepika Mohanty Project Associate have nicely explained the role of the Analytical Chemistry Unit to carry out Research & Development in the area of minerals, metals, metallurgy and materials science.
The NML museum was the attraction among the students & appraised the well-decorated museum with plenty of samples and wall-mounted posters that highlighted the latest and old technologies and products developed by the NML.
During the concluding session, teachers and students requested their next visit to the laboratory to gain deeper knowledge. Teachers expressed their views and were satisfied to know about the consistent effort and research emphasis in various sectors for the development of India. They also extend thanks to Dr Indranil Chattoraj, Director, CSIR-NML to permit Rajendra Vidhyalya School to visit the CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur.
