Jamshedpur: Mango Municipal Corporation Prepares to Avert Summer Water Crisis

Mango area to get improved water pressure; 40 HP pumps to benefit Shankosai, Ram Nagar and nearby localities

Jamshedpur: Ahead of the summer season, the Mango Municipal Corporation has stepped up preparations to prevent water scarcity in the Mango area. As part of efforts to strengthen the Mango Water Supply Scheme, the civic body has procured two new 40-horsepower (HP) high-capacity pumps, aimed at improving water pressure and supply to thousands of households.

The new pumps will be installed later this month near Aastha Space in Zone No. 3, officials said. With their commissioning, water pressure is expected to increase significantly in several localities, including Shankosai and Ram Nagar.

Focus on upgrading old infrastructure

In the first phase, the municipal corporation has set a target to replace four old pumps under the water supply scheme. At present, Mango receives around 40–42 million litres per day (MLD) of water, while the installed capacity of the scheme is 48 MLD. The civic body is working to bridge this gap and ensure supply in line with the system’s full capacity.

Contractors have been directed to complete all necessary preparations before the onset of summer. Special emphasis is being laid on replacing outdated motors and improving water quality to ensure that residents do not face complaints related to contaminated water.

More pumps planned at Gandhi Maidan and water treatment plant

To further strengthen the distribution network, Mango Municipal Corporation has also drawn up a future roadmap. Under this plan, a 25 HP pump will be installed at Gandhi Maidan (Zone No. 5), while a heavy-duty 60 HP pump will be set up at the Water Treatment Plant. These additions are expected to improve balance and efficiency in water distribution across the entire Mango region.

Currently, the operation, supervision, and maintenance of the Mango Water Supply Scheme are being handled directly by Mango Municipal Corporation. Earlier, these responsibilities were managed through the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department.

Areas to benefit from the upgrade

The localities expected to benefit most from the enhanced water supply include:

  • Shankosai
  • Subhash Colony
  • Repeat Colony
  • Ram Nagar
  • Shyam Nagar
  • Paras Nagar
