Jamshedpur-Kolkata Rail Route to be Gate-Free Soon, Three Major Crossings to be Removed

Jamshedpur

In a significant push toward high-speed rail travel, the South Eastern Railway (SER) has accelerated infrastructure work to increase train speeds to 160 km/h on the critical Howrah-Mumbai trunk route. The upgrades include the strategic closure of level crossings, the construction of new river bridges, and the modernization of signaling systems across the Chakradharpur and Kharagpur divisions.

Closing the Gates for Speed

To eliminate bottlenecks and enhance safety, the South Eastern Railway zone has issued tenders to close three major railway crossings at Chakulia, Rakhamines, and Jhargram. These crossings currently require trains to slow down and pose a risk of accidents.

According to railway officials, the closure of these gates is essential for achieving the 160 km/h speed target. To ensure local connectivity is not disrupted, these will be replaced by overbridges or underpasses. This follows similar successful projects at Govindpur, Salgajhuri, and Barigora, where overbridges and underbridges are already under construction or operational.

New Bridge on Badampahar Route

A key highlight of the current upgrade cycle is the construction of a new railway bridge over the river between Haldipokhar and Bahalda on the Tatanagar-Badampahar section.

  • Purpose: The new bridge is designed to ensure uninterrupted rail operations during the monsoon season, preventing the waterlogging and structural risks associated with older bridges.
  • Economic Impact: This route is vital for the transport of minerals and iron ore; the new infrastructure will streamline freight movement to industrial hubs while improving passenger train reliability.

Future-Proofing the Network

The railway administration also revealed long-term plans to double the track on the Tatanagar-Badampahar single line. Modern signaling and traction facilities were already commissioned last year as part of this phased expansion. Additionally, expansion works for railway yards and sheds at Badampahar and Gurumahisani have been ordered to handle increased traffic.

Impact on Commuters

The transition to a “Group A” high-speed corridor is expected to:

  1. Reduce Travel Time: Once the 160 km/h upgrade is complete, travel time between Howrah and Mumbai could be slashed by several hours.
  2. Increase Safety: Eliminating level crossings (like the recently closed Jugsalai crossing) significantly reduces the chances of track-related accidents and traffic congestion at city entry points.
  3. Monsoon Reliability: New high-level bridges will ensure that train services remain “all-weather,” avoiding the perennial delays caused by rising river levels.

Railway officials from the Chakradharpur division stated that while the construction work might necessitate brief “power blocks” (temporary service pauses), the long-term benefits will redefine rail travel for the millions of passengers using this lifeline route every year.
