Tensions Rise in Jamshedpur: Section 163 BNSS Imposed Across Six Police Zones Following Bar Brawl

Jamshedpur: In a major administrative crackdown to thwart potential law and order breakdowns, the Court of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Dhalbhum, has imposed strict prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) across six prominent police station areas in the city.

According to an official notification issued on July 1, 2026—the six affected zones placed under immediate restriction include:

  • Bistupur
  • Sakchi
  • Sonari
  • Kadma
  • Mango
  • MGM

Triggered by a High-Profile Incident

The preventative measure follows a recent highly-publicized disturbance at the Double Down Bar & Restaurant located in Bistupur. Following the incident, intelligence reports surfaced indicating that various groups were planning mass sit-ins (dharna), street protests, aggressive road blockades (road jam), public rallies, and demonstrations across the steel city.

Recognizing a severe and imminent threat to public tranquility and the local law-and-order apparatus, SDM Annav Mishra (IAS) executed the ex-parte prohibitory order to pre-emptively neutralize any escalations.

Key Prohibitions Enforced Under the Order

The official directive outlines a comprehensive set of temporary restrictions to maintain urban peace:

  • Protest Ban: Complete prohibition on all forms of sit-ins, demonstrations, gheraos (encirclement protests), and the burning of effigies.
  • Weapon Restrictions: Strict ban on carrying any lethal weapons, sticks (lathis), bows and arrows, spears, daggers, or sharp objects in public spaces.
  • Unlawful Assembly: A ban on the gathering of five or more individuals who assemble with an intent to disrupt peace or cause a public nuisance.
  • Noise Control: Loudspeakers and sound amplification systems are strictly prohibited from being operated without prior administrative authorization.

Exemptions Registered: The administration clarified that these restrictions will not apply to deployed magistrates, on-duty police personnel, medical professionals, or accredited media personnel.
