Jamshedpur: Govardhan Puja celebrations resonate with fervour, Raghubar performs rituals

Jamshedpur: The city witnessed vibrant celebrations of Govardhan Puja, marked by devout rituals and enthusiastic participation by the community. Odisha Governor, Raghubar Das also performed rituals.

On this auspicious occasion, devotees performed rituals in their homes, with a unique aspect being the worship conducted using cow dung in most households. Following a day of worship dedicated to Govardhan, a symbolic lamp was lit atop a collection of worship materials.

This year, Govardhan Puja took place a day after Diwali, a departure from the traditional schedule. Pandit Suryakant Mishra explained that due to a solar eclipse occurring the day after Deepawali, the usual observance of Govardhan Puja was not considered proper.

Govardhan Puja holds special significance as it involves the worship of Govardhan mountain (Giriraj ji) and the cow in the form of Shri Krishna. Annakoot Mahotsav, a grand celebration, takes place throughout the Brij region, including Govardhan, Vrindavan, and Mathura. The festival extends from Kartik Pratipada to Kartik Poornima.

Cow dung plays a crucial role in the worship rituals. Devotees use cow dung to create a comprehensive scene, incorporating symbols of deities, the Sun, Moon, and the Cow. The worship extends to fields and barns, encompassing a representation of the natural environment.

The festivities commence with Vedic rites and prayers offered to Lord Krishna. Devotees, in a symbolic gesture, circumambulate the cow dung image clockwise, presenting flowers, incense, and other ritual objects. As an expression of devotion, a minimum of 56 delicacies, known as ‘Chappan Bhoga,’ are meticulously prepared and offered to the deity.

The fervent celebrations of Govardhan Puja in Jamshedpur reflect the deep spiritual connection and cultural vibrancy of the community. Despite the altered timing this year, the devotees showcased their unwavering dedication through traditional rituals and the unique use of cow dung in the worship of Giriraj ji and Shri Krishna, adding a distinctive charm to the festivities.
