Jamshedpur, April 6: Since last several years JEH (Jamshedpur Eye Hospital) is conducting multiple CSR activities to reduce the causes of curable blindness and visual impairment in this region.
In India, 9.3 million children are Visually Impaired (Vision less than 6/18) and Refractive error is one of the most important curable causes.
To address the total solution of this problem, JEH launched a new program under which they would provide free spectacles to all the children examined and screened at JEH or at outreach centres.
The initiative aims to reduce visual impairment among children caused by refractive error.

This initiative was initiated from the month of March 2023 with collaboration with an NGO ‘Vision Spring’. In the month of March total 43 children were prescribed spectacle and on Thursday, April 6, JEH distributed 1st lot of spectacles to the children.
Ruchi Narendran, President, JEH launched this unique initiative by distributing the 1st lot of free spectacle to the children on Thursday during the program held at seminar room, Jamshedpur Eye Hospital.
Program was addressed by the President JEH, Ruchi Narendran, Secretary and Superintendent Dr SP Jakhanwal and Rakesh Roshan from Vision Spring.
Dr S P Jakhanwal, Secretary and Superintendent, Jamshedpur Eye Hospital said, “This is an ongoing programme and to increase the number of beneficiaries we would be enrolling more schools under this initiative this year. This initiative will have a great impact on reducing the visual impairment among the children which is unique and first time being launched in this region.”

The function was attended by JEH Doctors, Optometrists, Administrative officers, and local union committee members.

In addition to performing free cataract surgery to the camp patients, JEH is constantly striving to reduce the visual impairment among the children also. Training of Teacher’s at Schools and Heath Care workers at villages to screen cases of Visual Impairment of school going children and among rural population is one of our major initiatives. To reach the unreachable recently we launched the ‘Satellite Mobile Eye Clinic on Van’ in collaboration with Rotary Club of Jamshedpur & TSF with the aim to achieve the target of reducing the prevalence of visual impairment in the country from 26.68% to 16.26% set by NPCB.
