Jamshedpur, May 26: Adityapur resident Dr B Mahanta passed away on Thursday at the age of 90 years. A pall of gloom descended in the entire Saraikela-Kharsawan district as soon as the news of his death spread. Dr Mahanta, popularly known as Mahato Doctor left behind his two sons and two daughters and a host of relatives and admirers.
At a time when doctors’ fees were on an upswing, Dr Mahanta charge Rs 50 from his patients. He was a messiah for children. A good medic, Dr Mahanta was noted for his curative services to people who suffered from hitherto incurable diseases. It was common to notice crowds of poor patients at his clinic at Dindli Basti. He was known to provide free treatment and medicines to sa segment of the poorest of the poor. At the same time, the rural patients from far and wide including Adityapur, Gamharia, Kandra, never returned disappointed.
