Woman Evicted After Giving Birth to Daughter, Discovering Husband’s Secret First Marriage

Jamshedpur: A woman residing in Sonari has accused her husband and in-laws of torture and intimidation after she gave birth to a daughter and also exposed his secret first marriage.

The victim, Hemlata, submitted a formal written complaint to the Sonari Police Station and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), demanding legal action against her abusers.

When contacted, a senior police official of Sonari Police Station said, “We have received a written complaint in this regard. The matter is being investigated. We will take action as per the law.”

Escalating Dowry Demands

According to the complaint, Hemlata got married to Kunal Verma, a resident of Noamundi. Hemlata’s family claims that they were unaware that Verma was already married to another woman.

Hemlata’s family gave ₹2 lakh in cash alongside household items and valuables worth nearly ₹3 lakh. Shortly after the wedding, the complainant claimed that her in-laws demanded an additional ₹5 lakh for “house repairs.”

Secret Revealed

The deception unravelled when Kunal Verma brought another woman and a child into the house, declaring that they would all live together. When Hemlata objected, her husband and in-laws allegedly threatened her with dire consequences. She subsequently fled to her parental home in Jamshedpur, where she gave birth to a daughter. The birth of a girl child reportedly infuriated the in-laws, who aggressively renewed their demand for the remaining ₹4 lakh.

The harassment culminated in violence on April 19, when multiple members of the in-laws’ family forcibly broke into Hemlata’s parental home in Sonari and assaulted them. The victim’s family then met with the City Superintendent of Police in Jamshedpur, who assured them that the department would take action after a thorough investigation.
