Administration tests response systems, engages public and institutions in disaster preparedness
Jamshedpur: In a first-of-its-kind emergency preparedness initiative, the East Singhbhum district administration today conducted a city-wide mock drill simulating an air strike on Jamshedpur. The elaborate exercise was aimed at evaluating the district’s capacity to respond swiftly and effectively in the face of a high-risk aerial attack scenario.
The drill, part of a broader disaster management framework, mobilized security forces, emergency services, industry stakeholders, and educational institutions to test the operational readiness of all sectors in real-time conditions.

District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal led the entire exercise from the Central Command Room, overseeing communications, decision-making, and rapid response protocols. She was joined by the Dhalbhum Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and the City Superintendent of Police, who remained in constant coordination with field officers and the Command and Control Room (CCR).
The high-level officials issued key directives, coordinated simulated rescue operations, and monitored live updates from across the city. The focus was not just on administrative agility, but also on inter-departmental coordination under pressure.
To ensure a holistic approach, the drill extended into the city’s factories, commercial establishments, and schools. Mock evacuation exercises, emergency response training, and safety briefings were held across multiple locations, including major industrial units and educational campuses.
Employees and students participated in controlled simulations, practicing drills on how to take cover, communicate, and safely exit affected premises. Awareness sessions were held simultaneously to educate citizens about immediate steps to take during aerial threats — including alerting authorities, seeking designated shelters, and avoiding misinformation.
Simulated Strike at Maharani Mansion
The core of the mock drill revolved around a simulated air strike warning received from the historic Maharani Mansion in the Circuit House Area — a densely populated and strategically sensitive zone. Upon receiving the alert, senior officials swiftly initiated verification procedures, followed by the deployment of the Disaster Management’s Quick Response Team (QRT).
Emergency units rushed to the site to simulate rescue, medical support, and relief measures. Observers assessed the performance of the rescue team, communication speed, and effectiveness of crowd management.
According to officials, the drill served a dual purpose — stress-testing emergency infrastructure and sensitizing the general public. “In an era where urban areas face increasing vulnerability to unconventional threats, this mock drill is a proactive step towards equipping our citizens and institutions,” said Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal.
The district administration emphasized that today’s mock drill is not just a one-off event but part of a broader strategy to build community-level resilience. Future drills are expected to simulate other emergency scenarios such as chemical leaks, building collapses, and cyberattacks.
With Jamshedpur being home to major industries and a dense population, preparedness exercises like these are critical. Today’s drill not only showcased the administration’s readiness but also sent a strong message about the importance of civil-military coordination, real-time communication, and public awareness in dealing with 21st-century threats.
As city officials prepare a comprehensive report on the findings and lessons from the simulation, there are plans to further strengthen emergency response networks and introduce such drills as a regular part of urban governance and disaster readiness strategy.
