Red hibiscus prices skyrocket in Kolkata on Kali Puja day

Kolkata flower markets experienced a massive surge in red hibiscus prices on Sunday during Kali Puja.
The double celebration of Kali Puja and Diwali drove consumer demand for ritual flowers across retail hubs.
A 108-flower garland cost consumers between ₹150 and ₹200 across various city neighborhoods.
Just one week ago, local vendors sold the same garland for merely ₹25 to ₹30.
Devotees faced heavy financial pressure while buying larger floral offerings for special ritual ceremonies.
A massive garland containing 1,008 hibiscus flowers reached a peak price of ₹1,200.
Last year, retailers sold the exact same large garland for ₹700 to ₹800.
While red hibiscus remains popular year-round, festival traditions routinely multiply consumer demand.
Farmers initially raised prices at the field level to maximize profits during peak festival season.
This wholesale price increase quickly created a cascading effect across city wholesale and retail outlets.
Retailers in South Kolkata markets adjusted their sales strategies to protect their business profit margins.
Vendors completely stopped selling individual hibiscus stems to avoid incurring immediate operational losses.
Sellers combined raw flower costs with weaving labor charges to maximize earnings through garland sales.
Other ceremonial flowers also saw dramatic price spikes throughout local wholesale and retail markets.
Lotus flowers surged to ₹35 per stem, up from ₹15 recorded just last week.
Saffron marigolds sold for ₹200 per kilogram, while yellow marigolds reached ₹220 per kilogram.
