Jadugoda, Sept 21: The strike call given by the Singhbhum Uranium Mazdoor Union (SUMU) against the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) management, entered the second day on Wednesday as workers intensified their six-point demand that included profit sharing, post retirement medical facilities and pension among other points. It may be mentioned here that the four UCIL employees unions had organized strikes and protest under a common banner.
Babu Lal Soren, son of Jharkhand Minister Champai Soren added his weight behind the striking UCIL workers’ demands. Addressing the workers, Babu Lal said, “The UCIL management has been given an extended time of 24 hours within which it should shed off its adamant attitude and be more flexible and talk to the striking employees across the table in an amicable atmosphere. The management should take the initiative to end the strike. The workers’ demands are justified. But if the UCIL management does not change its attitude, then the company will have to return the land to the people so that they can earn their livelihood from farming.”
Soren took stock of the UCIL management’s stand during his talk with SUMU General Secretary Ramesh Majhi and discussed further strategy of the union if the UCIL management was disinclined to talk across the table with the agitated workers.
