Jamshedpur, May 27: East Singhbhum voters registered 59.07 per cent turnout in the fourth and last phase of Panchayat elections here on Friday. Barring few petty incidents, polling was largely peaceful, official sources said.

Polling began at 7 am across 711 polling booths in Golmuri-cum-Jugsalai and Jamshedpur block. A short spell of drizzle played spoilsport for a while.

But voting soon resumed at all the booths.

Today’s polls would determine the fate of candidates vying for seven seats of Zila Parishad members, 55 Mukhiyas and 71 Panchayat committee members. The counting of votes would take place at Parsudih Bazar Samiti on 31st May.

In today’s polls, the enthusiasm of rural and semi-urban voters was encouraging for the candidates. At some of the booths, women voters apparently outnumbered their male counterparts. Some of them said they had reached the polling booth to exercise their voting right despite having a lot of household chores pending.

After 11 am, many polling booths wore an abandoned look. Voters however kept pouring in intermittently till 3 pm. In rural areas, voting percentage reached 70 per cent at some booths.

Bagbera and Parsudih witnessed minor scuffle between the supporters of various candidates. Supporters of various candidates jostled near Subhash Middle School, Harharguttu, in Bagbera.

SDO Sandeep Kumar Meena reached the scene and removed the crowd. Later, police forced several shops to shutdown to prevent crowding near the polling booth, sources said.

In Parsudih, two groups of supporters of rival candidates fell out with each other near the polling booth at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College. They were soon removed the area to maintain peace.

In Bagbera Panchayat Mandap, a dilapidated building housed polling booth no 32 and 35. Here, polling duty staff faced much inconvenience as there was neither adequate sitting arrangement for them nor was the fan at the polling booths working. Voter turnout was encouraging from 7 am to 11 am.
