Home Voting begins in Jamshedpur, teams reach elderly and disabled voters

Jamshedpur: With the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 in full swing, a significant initiative to facilitate voting for elderly citizens (85+) and those with disabilities has been launched – Home Voting. Masang Tudu from the Ghatshila block, assigned booth number 188, exercised his franchise through this novel method.

In a bid to ensure inclusiveness, voters aged 85 and above, as well as those with at least 40 percent disability, across all six assembly constituencies, will have the opportunity to cast their votes through postal ballots via home voting. This process spans across the first phase from May 14 to 19 and the second phase from May 21 to 22.

The commencement of home voting for the Jamshedpur parliamentary constituency begins today, marking a pivotal moment in the electoral process. A total of 226 voters had applied for home voting, reflecting the significance of this initiative in empowering elderly and disabled citizens to exercise their democratic rights.

Polling personnel are diligently traversing neighborhoods, going door-to-door to facilitate the voting process for eligible individuals. This initiative underscores the commitment to ensuring that every eligible voter, regardless of age or physical ability, can participate in shaping the democratic process.

Upholding the principles of inclusivity and transparency in the electoral process, the Election Commission’s guidelines have paved the way for significant initiatives such as home voting. In Jamshedpur district alone, 226 voters already applied for this service, underscoring its importance in ensuring that every eligible citizen can exercise their democratic right.

In a proactive endeavor to uphold fair electoral practices, District Election Officer Ananya Mittal recently convened a pivotal meeting at the Collectorate Auditorium in Jamshedpur. Attended by representatives from various political parties, the meeting addressed crucial aspects of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Accompanied by Deputy Development Commissioner Manish Kumar and PD ITDA cum Senior Officer Expenditure Cell Dipankar Chaudhary, Mittal provided comprehensive insights into the arrangements made at polling centers. Discussions encompassed facilitating home voting and postal ballot services, as well as ensuring meticulous scrutiny of election expenditure registers.

A significant announcement during the meeting was the introduction of home voting provisions for a specific demographic. Mittal revealed that individuals aged 85 and above, along with those with a disability of at least 40 percent, would be eligible for home voting, in accordance with Election Commission guidelines. The substantial number of applications received underscores the significance of this initiative in fostering inclusivity within the electoral process.
