Chatra (IANS): District police dealt a severe blow to an interstate narcotics syndicate on Tuesday after arresting a courier carrying 2.9 kg of high-quality illegal wet opium. The seized narcotics carry an estimated black-market value of nearly ₹17 lakh.
Authorities captured the accused, identified as Anil Kumar Yadav from Sikkid village, during a high-alert vehicle checkpoint operation near the Jharkhand-Bihar border.
Border Barricades Trap Moving Consignment
During a press conference at the Collectorate on Tuesday, Chatra Superintendent of Police Animesh Naithani revealed that the department deployed a special task force after receiving precise intelligence. Tipsters warned that a smuggler carrying a large haul of opium was traveling the Chatra-Jori route inside a passenger tempo, heading toward Delhi by way of Gaya, Bihar.
In response, a special raiding team led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) quickly set up strategic barricades near Gosaidih.

The Interception: Police intercepted the targeted passenger tempo at the border checkpoint.

The Chase: Spotting the uniform presence, Yadav leaped from the vehicle and attempted to sprint away into the brush with a black backpack. Alert officers chased him down and overpowered him before he could escape.
A search of his backpack yielded the 2.9 kg of wet opium, two smartphones used for coordination, and ₹1,200 in cash.
Syndicate Supply Chains Stretch to Delhi and Punjab
Preliminary interrogations reveal that Yadav worked strictly as a low-level transit courier for a sprawling, highly organized interstate narcotics network.
“The syndicate assigned the courier to transport the raw consignment directly into Delhi. Once he arrived, handlers planned to call his phone with the exact drop-off coordinates and buyer details,” SP Naithani explained.
Data extracted from the seized smartphones has already given investigators crucial breakthroughs regarding the syndicate’s operational chain. Police have successfully identified the primary regional supplier and expect to make follow-up arrests shortly. Investigators noted that this Chatra-based opium pipeline maintains active distribution links stretching across Bihar, Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, with evidence suggesting Yadav executed multiple cross-country deliveries in the past.
