Himangshu Chakraborty, Asha Kumari win LIC Chess Titles in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, June 16: Himangshu Chakraborty and Asha Kumari emerged as champions in the men’s and women’s categories respectively at the LIC Divisional Chess Tournament 2026, which concluded at the LIE Sports Club in Bistupur on Tuesday.

The two-day tournament, held from June 15 to 16, witnessed participation from ten players and was conducted under the Swiss system format. International Arbiter Chandan Kumar Prasad served as the Chief Arbiter and supervised the competition.

In the men’s category, Himangshu Chakraborty secured the championship title after defeating Ashok Das in the final round. Balwant Kumar Singh finished second by overcoming Y. Loknath, while Ankit Bhardwaj claimed third place with a victory over Rajesh Kumar Ravi.

In the women’s category, the champion was decided through a best-of-three format. Asha Kumari dominated the contest by winning all three matches against Rashmi Samal to clinch the title.

The prize distribution ceremony was attended by chief guest K. Meenakshi, Manager (Personnel). LIE Sports Club Honorary Secretary G. Ravishankar, Treasurer D.P. Balmiki, and Assistant Secretary Ashish Dey were also present.

The top three players in both categories were awarded prizes. The top two finishers from the men’s and women’s sections have qualified for the upcoming Regional Chess Tournament.
