Twenty-year-old Ashutosh Panigrahi from Jamshedpur set a record in the Asia Book of Records for his rapid identification of Indian classical ragas.
Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, he identified and sang the distinctive melodic phrase, or pakad, of 50 ragas in just three minutes and 47 seconds on October 4.
His performance also earned him a place in the India Book of Records. He is the first autistic individual in the country to achieve this distinction.
Music teacher Pawan Kumar Chaubey guided the Karandih resident through three years of rigorous training. Chaubey tailored his teaching methods to nurture the young musician’s talent.
Chaubey praised Ashutosh’s exceptional memory and unique ability to recall complex musical patterns effortlessly. The young artist has already performed classical music at Varanasi’s famous Assi Ghat.
Ashutosh has received medals and official certificates from both record organizations. His mother, Nivedita Kar, stated that he submitted another attempt to the Guinness World Records on October 10.
The family expects the official results of the Guinness submission within 90 days. Ashutosh expressed his desire to continue learning and eventually become a full-time classical music teacher.
His accomplishments extend beyond music into mathematics and sports. In 2023, he entered the India Book of Records for swift mathematical calculations using the Indian abacus system.
He subsequently won three bronze medals in powerlifting at Special Olympics Bharat in 2024. He also secured two gold medals and a bronze at the state-level Paralympics in February 2026.
Alongside his music lessons, Ashutosh currently undergoes computer training. His family aims to build his self-reliance while helping him realize his dream of sharing his musical knowledge with others.
