Jhargram, Nov 2: A shocking incident in Talgram village under the Beliabera police station area of West Bengal’s Jhargram district has left residents outraged after a grandmother allegedly tried to kill her newborn granddaughter by pouring poison into her mouth.

According to police, a 16-year-old girl, who had recently returned home from Chennai after becoming pregnant, gave birth to a baby girl. When she arrived at her in-laws’ house, her family reportedly taunted her over the child’s gender. It is alleged that her mother-in-law, angered by the birth of a girl instead of a boy, administered poison to the infant.

The baby was rushed to Gopiballavpur Rural Hospital, then to the Super Specialty Hospital and later to Jhargram Medical College, where she is being treated in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU). Doctors said the child’s condition remains critical but under constant monitoring.

Police have arrested the accused grandmother and produced her in Jhargram court. “We are investigating the case seriously,” said a police official. Locals have condemned the act as “a blot on humanity” and demanded the harshest punishment for the accused
