CSIR-NML Jamshedpur Coaches Master Trainers in Scientific E-Waste Recycling

Jamshedpur: CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML) marked World Environment Day today by concluding its five-day training program for master trainers on e-waste recycling. Run from June 1 to June 5, 2026, the initiative supported the Government of India’s MeitY project and Mission LiFE under the theme “Informal Sector Capacity Building on E-Waste Management.” CSIR-NML partnered with C-MET Hyderabad and CIPET-LARPM Bhubaneswar to organize the event.

NML Director Dr. Sandip Ghosh Choudhury opened the program by emphasizing the urgent need to transition informal e-waste handling into a safe, scientific framework. The initiative aims to equip these newly certified master trainers to train 15,000 informal recyclers across India.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in hands-on learning, tracking the full recycling route of highly valuable waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). Trainees worked inside NML’s Urban Ore Recycling Centre, observing safe depopulation, crushing, gravity separation, and hydrometallurgical processes like leaching and electrowinning to recover precious metals like copper and gold.

On the final day, Project Leader Dr. Manis Kumar Jha and Dr. Ankur Sharma evaluated the trainees, addressed doubts, and distributed certificates. To celebrate the environment, twelve master trainers from TERI and REKART also planted mango trees on the NML campus.
