From Bench to Big Moments: Jugsalai’s Gopal Munda steps up for Jamshedpur FC

Jamshedpur, January 7: From watching matches on the sidelines last season to deciding them on the pitch this year, Gopal Munda’s rise in the Reliance Foundation Youth Development League has been one of the most encouraging stories for Jamshedpur FC.

The Jugsalai boy has seized his moment in the RFDL, emerging as a key attacking outlet for head coach Kaizad Ambapardiwalla. After spending much of last season on the bench, Gopal has started all the matches in the ongoing regional qualifiers and repaid the faith shown in him with mature performances and timely goals.

Gopal announced his growing influence early in the tournament, scoring in Jamshedpur FC’s emphatic opening win against Chhattisgarh United, where his movement and finishing reflected a player full of confidence. He followed that up with another crucial strike in the high-stakes clash against Zinc Football Academy, calmly tapping into an open net in injury time to seal a 2–0 victory that confirmed Jamshedpur’s qualification to the zonal round.

Beyond the goals, Gopal’s work rate, off-the-ball movement and understanding with fellow attackers have made him a constant threat in the final third. His ability to arrive late into the box and exploit spaces has added a new dimension to Jamshedpur’s attack, particularly in tight matches where margins are small.

His form has not been limited to the RFDL alone. In the ongoing AIFF Elite League, Gopal has continued to make his mark, scoring two goals in four matches and playing an important role in Jamshedpur FC’s strong start to the competition. For Kaizad, the improvement has been clear to see. The local midfielder now looks more assured, physically stronger and tactically sharper than he was a year ago.

Reflecting on his journey, Gopal spoke about the change in mindset that has driven his progress. “Last year was a learning phase for me. Sitting on the bench taught me a lot about patience and understanding the game. This season, I wanted to make sure I was ready whenever I got the chance,” he said.

The youngster also credited the coaching staff and his teammates for his development. “Coach Kaizad has given me a lot of confidence and clarity about my role. Playing regularly has helped me express myself, and my teammates have supported me throughout,” Gopal added.

For a player who grew up dreaming of representing his hometown club, Gopal’s rise has been a proud moment for Jugsalai and for Jamshedpur FC’s youth system. As the Young Men of Steel prepare for the next phase of the RFDL, Gopal Munda’s emergence stands as a reminder of what sustained trust, hard work and local talent can achieve when opportunity finally meets preparation.
