Jamshedpur, Jan 7: A major attempt at cow smuggling was foiled late on Monday night in the Azadnagar No. 2 area under Mango police station area, where police rescued five cows being transported in a car bearing a fake registration number.
The action was taken following a tip-off, leading to swift interception of the vehicle.
According to police, the cows were being cruelly tied and crammed into a car (registration number JH 05CC 1300) with the intent of illegal transportation.
Acting on the information, Mango police mounted a late-night check and stopped the vehicle near Azadnagar No. 2.
On inspection, five cows were found in a distressed condition inside the car.
The driver was taken into custody at the spot.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the registration number affixed to the vehicle was fake, adding gravity to the offence.
Police suspect the involvement of an organised cow-smuggling racket operating in the area for some time.
All the rescued cows have been shifted to a safe shelter, where they are receiving care and medical attention.
Police are in the process of registering a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and other relevant sections. Interrogation of the detained driver is underway to trace the larger network, and further arrests are expected soon.
