Founders Day was first instituted by Tata Steel on March 3, 1932. It was D N Madan, Chief Accountant, Tata Iron and Steel Company, who first conceived the idea of observing and celebrating an annual gathering to commemorate the birth anniversary of J.N. Tata. Founders day provided him with an opportunity of expressing his regard for the memory of the genius to whose faith and adjustment, energy and perseverance, the works, the towns and the environs of Jamshedpur bear enduring witness.
J.N. Tata, a pioneer, a visionary, a seer, as he is popularly recognized, was the person who secured a strong foothold in the map of the industrialized nations of the world. The next momentous year was 1958, the year of Tata Steels Golden Jubilee. Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru was the Chief Guest.
The Golden Jubilee celebration took place on the 1st and 2nd of March 1958. However, Nehruji had left a day before and could not witness the Founders Day ceremony. The celebrations that year saw a cavalcade of floats which were the result of many days labour by the workers in the various shops. Colourful, ingenious and attractive, they raised cheers from the crowds that lined the road.
Jubilee Park is equipped with special lighting. Around 52 workers comprising visualisers and light men from Chandannagar, Bengal joined hands as in earlier years for creating lighting magic throughout the park. The illumination at the Founder’s Statue in Jubilee Park will be switched at 7:00 pm on March 2. It will be open for public viewing.
Tata Steel and other Tata Group companies will pay homage to the founder at his statue near the works main gate. The founders day procession in this regard will begin at 7:00 a.m. The event will also include homage to J N Tata by all dignitaries present.
With the support of the citizens of Jamshedpur and the Local Administration, a spectacular pageantry will be organised. This will be flagged off by chairman, Tata Sons, in front of the founders statue near general post office, Bistupur. The pageantry will include tableaus from associate companies, social organisations, JAP and RAF. Approximately 2000 participants will take part in the pageantry.
A befitting sporting tribute to the founder, the founders day sports, involving participation from various Tata Group companies and others will begin at Gopal Maidan at 01:15 pm on March 3.
