Former Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das calls for social boycott of JMM-Congress MPs over Waqf Bill opposition

Jamshedpur: After the Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025, it has triggered a political stir in the State. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) strongly opposed the bill and voted against it, drawing sharp criticism from former Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Raghubar Das. Addressing a press conference at his Agrico residence on Thursday, Das accused JMM of exposing its “anti-tribal face” by opposing the bill and appealed to the tribal community to socially boycott JMM-Congress MPs.

Das emphasized that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill includes crucial amendments benefiting Jharkhand’s tribal communities. He stated that once enacted, the law would prevent the declaration of Waqf property in tribal areas falling under Schedule 5 and Schedule 6 of the Constitution. Calling it a historic step towards preserving the constitutional rights and cultural identity of tribals, Das credited the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for securing tribal land rights.

According to Das, this bill would also curb land grabbing under the guise of religious conversions, which he claimed had led to the mass appropriation of land as Waqf property. He accused JMM of misleading the tribals while engaging in vote-bank politics to appease Muslims.

Lashing out at JMM and Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Das alleged that the party has completely fallen into the trap of appeasement politics since aligning with Congress. He said that JMM, which claims to represent tribal interests, exposed its real face by opposing a bill that safeguards tribal land from Waqf encroachments.

Das questioned the tribal community, urging them to recognize JMM’s actions and seek answers from its leaders. “Does JMM want tribal land to be declared as Waqf?” he asked, stressing that the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution was designed to protect tribal heritage, identity, and land.

Das criticized the expansion of graveyards, mosques, mazars, and dargahs in tribal areas, calling it a direct threat to tribal culture. He argued that the presence of Waqf property in Scheduled Areas violates the spirit of the Constitution and weakens the region’s heritage and identity. According to him, the NDA government has corrected this historical wrong through the bill’s provisions.

Referring to the recent attack on a Pahan (tribal priest) during a Sarhul Puja procession in Pithoria, Ranchi, Das linked the incident to JMM’s alleged Muslim appeasement policies. He urged the tribal society to wake up and recognize JMM’s real agenda, warning that the party is sacrificing tribal culture and heritage for political gains.

Appealing to the tribal society of Jharkhand, Raghubar  called for a social boycott of all JMM and Congress MPs who voted against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. He accused them of standing against tribal interests in favor of Muslims. “I urge all tribals to reject these MPs and demand explanations for their betrayal,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, Das praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, reiterating that the bill ensures that Waqf property cannot be declared in tribal regions under Schedule 5 and Schedule 6. He called the bill a “protective shield” for Jharkhand’s tribals, safeguarding their land, culture, and identity.
