Elephant menace strikes fear in Chandil villagers

Residents grapple with crop destruction and Forest department inaction

Chandil: In the serene villages of Bana and Pitki, nestled within the Lupungdih Panchayat in the Chandil forest area, a reign of terror has descended upon the villagers, courtesy of an unruly elephant. Over the past week, the villagers have become prisoners in their own homes, gripped by fear whenever this colossal intruder approaches.

On one front, vigilant night guards stand sentry, but on the other, opportunistic herds of elephants create nests amidst the standing paddy crops, occasionally breaching the boundaries of the villages. These uninvited guests raid homes and grain stores, leaving the Kshatriyas—the traditional protectors and suppliers—helpless as their stored grains disappear.

The marauding tusker elephants, distinct from the main herd, infiltrate the village daily, prowling from night till morning. Their unwelcome presence disrupts daily routines and renders fieldwork a perilous endeavor.
The confluence of these two threats—the unpredictable elephant menace and the perceived inaction of the forest department—has plunged the villagers into an unnerving state of existence. Crops such as paddy, tomatoes, brinjals, bottle gourd, pumpkins, and green vegetables fall prey to the elephant’s voracious appetite.

Compounding the villagers’ distress, the forest department has failed to disburse the promised compensation for Kshatriya supply crops, despite the villagers diligently submitting fulfillment forms for two consecutive years. This administrative neglect has ignited a spark of anger among the affected communities.
In a bid to remedy the situation, a specialized elephant drive team was summoned from Jhalda, West Bengal, but their efforts to relocate the elephant herd from Bana forest to the Dalma Sanctuary were thwarted by the abundance of food sources in the area. The relentless daily destruction and trampling of crops have left farmers grappling with anxiety over safely transporting their ripe paddy harvest to their barns.
While the villagers gear up for the festivities of Diwali Puja, the menacing specter of marauding elephants continues to cast a dark shadow over their lives. Urgent action and resolution of this ongoing crisis are imperative for the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
