Jamshedpur, Nov 1: Former international cyclist Avtar Singh from Jamshedpur was honored by the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian cycling and inclusive sports. The felicitation ceremony was held in New Delhi, on Saturday, with CFI President Pankaj Singh as the chief guest.
During the ceremony, Pankaj Singh presented Avtar Singh with a Certificate of Appreciation, lauding his remarkable achievements as a cyclist and his lifelong dedication to promoting sports among differently-abled athletes.
A seven-time National Cycling Champion, Avtar Singh captained Team India at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and the 1982 Asian Games, earning widespread recognition for his skill and leadership. He also set a national record in the kilometer time trial at the Edmonton Games in Canada.
A science graduate and an accomplished coach trained in India, Germany, and Malaysia, Avtar Singh currently serves as the Regional Coach for the Asia Pacific Region (Special Olympics Inc.). Over the years, he has devoted himself to training mentally challenged athletes and advancing the cause of inclusive sports globally.
Congratulating him, S.K. Tomar, Secretary of the Jharkhand Masters Athletics Association, said, “This is a proud moment not only for Jharkhand but for the entire country. Avtar Singh has travelled to over 40 countries, inspiring both master and differently-abled athletes through his dedication and achievements.”
Vijay Singh, Vice President of the Masters Athletics Federation of India, also extended his wishes, calling the honor “a true inspiration for the Indian sports fraternity” and thanked the CFI for recognizing such a devoted athlete.
