Carmel Junior students offer �skit� of hope on suicide prevention day

Jamshedpur, Sept 10: Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City, Youth Services assisted TMH in conducting the two day programme that seeks to make citizens of the steel city aware of suicidal tendencies and ways to prevent it.

A flagship programme of the Psychiatry Division of TMH, this programme was lead by the H.O.D. Dr. Sanjay Kumar Agarwal and his team of Dr. Manoj Sahoo and Ms. Harshita Biswas.

The club coordinated with various schools for student participation in essay and debate competitions along with group discussions on the 9th of September. Youths services members coordinated with Samarthya (XLRI) for this day`s event.

Sunil Bhaskaran,Vice president, Corporate Services, Tata Steel was the Chief Guest, on the occasion and Mrs Ruchi Narendran was the Guest of Honour.

Mr Bhaskaran appreciated the initiative taken by the Department of Psychiatry and reemphasised the continuos support by Tata Steel to the different stakeholders of the society. Mrs Ruchi Narendran also praised the effort and talked about the value of family relations and communication.

She strongly recommended that such programmes should be frequently conducted for parents also. The welcome address was given by Dr Sanjay Agarwal, HOD Psychiatry.

On the 10th of September, the Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City produced and directed a 20 minute skit on the theme of suicide prevention.

Titled �Knowledge is Prevention�, this skit was performed by the students of Carmel Junior College on the event of the World Suicide Prevention Day programme organized by TMH on 10th September 2015.

The humorous skit is an effort at spreading awareness about the ways loved ones can help prevent suicides. It talks of an acronym �IS PATH WARM� that describes the symptoms of suicidal tendencies where: �I-Ideation, S-Substance Abuse, P-Purposelessness, A-Anxiety, T-Trapped, H-Hopelessness, W-Withdrawal, A-Anger, R-Recklessness,
M-Mood Changes.

Followed by Skit was the final round of debate competition, where the two teams debated on the topic �Connected World & Isolated People�. After the debate there was a talk by the Samarthrya team, XLRI on various issues of teenagers and how to deal with them. �

Finally, there was a Panel discussion on �impact of modernization on the various aspects of relationship�.
The panellists were Dr S.H.Nizamie, eminent psychiatrist and former director of Central Institute of Psychiatry Ranchi, Dr Santanu Sarkar, professor of Human relations management at XLRI, Mr Ranjeet Singh (Editor,Prabhat Khabar), Deepali Mishra (TQM) and a parent of a teenager Mrs Ujwala Asundi Kumar. Students asked many questions related to depression, addiction, handling stress and relationship issues connected with parents and significant others.

The students who participated in the skit include: Soumak Basak, Swapnil Banerjee, Suphal Banerjee, Nidhi Rao, C. S. Dharma Rajan, Dhruv Vasani, Abhishek Mohanty, Adarsh Chaturvedi, Pragya Mishra, Anam Salim, Jeet Vasani & Shubham Pandey.

The script was written, produced and directed by Mrs. Ujwala Asundi Kumar, director of youth services, Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City. Able support was provided by the Youth services team of Chaitali Sachdeva, Dr.Soma Ghosh, Kiran Debuka, Sandeep Bafna, Nitulika Singh, Hetal Adesra, Alka Garg, Jalpa Parikh, Club Secretary Sukanya Das and Club President Sushma Chaturvedi.

The programme was attended by school students, principals, and members from Rotary club of Jamshedpur Steel City, members of Samarthya XLRI and various personnel from TMH as well as other members of the medical fraternity.

Among the other dignitaries present were Mrs Jolly Bhaskaran, Dr G.Ramdas, GM, medical service and senior doctors from TMH.

The programme concluded with prize distribution for essay competition, group discussion and debate competition and vote of thanks.
