Hazaribagh (IANS): A large mob stormed and vandalized the site office of a private mining infrastructure company early Tuesday morning, plunging the Barkagaon area into deep civil tension.
The company operates as the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) for NTPC’s Badam coal mining project.
According to police, the attack began around 5:00 AM. While the rioters inflicted significant damage on office structures, doors, windows, and furniture, all company employees managed to flee to safety without injury.

Escalating Disputes Trigger Backlash
The violent outbreak stems from deep-rooted conflicts between local villagers and mining officials. For months, the two sides have locked horns over unresolved issues regarding:
- Land acquisition and displacement
- Rehabilitation packages
- Inadequate compensation
- Local employment opportunities
The flashpoint occurred recently when disgruntled villagers gheraoed company officials. Following a police rescue operation, the mining firm filed a First Information Report (FIR) against hundreds of locals. The subsequent arrest and jailing of several villagers severely fueled local resentment, culminating in Tuesday’s early-morning raid.
Police Launch Investigation
Barkagaon Police Station In-charge Deepak Singh confirmed that a massive, unidentified mob orchestrated the vandalism.
“We have deployed additional police personnel to stabilize the area,” Singh stated. “Our teams are currently reviewing CCTV footage and questioning locals to identify and apprehend the rioters.”
Senior administrative and police officials, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), have arrived at the site to monitor the fragile security situation. Authorities maintain that the investigation is scanning all angles, focusing heavily on the blowback from the recent police crackdowns on protestors.
