Jamshedpur: Research in tribal and regional languages has become increasingly difficult at Kolhan University, where 44 students have been waiting for their PhD registration for over seven years. The students, who completed their course work back in 2017 in tribal and regional languages, have not received their results or any updates from the university. The prolonged delay has left them in a state of uncertainty, with no information provided regarding their registration.
These 44 students had worked on research projects in languages such as Ho, Santhali and Kudmali. Of the total, 21 students worked in Ho, 18 in Santhali and 5 in Kudmali. Despite completing their coursework, none of them have been officially registered for their PhD program. The situation has worsened due to the absence of a permanent faculty member in tribal and regional languages at the university.
Correspondence has been made both to the university and the state education minister, but as of now, there has been no resolution or decision taken. The delay has severely impacted these students’ academic and professional futures, leaving them frustrated and without clear guidance. With no permanent faculty and no updates regarding their PhD status, the students are left wondering if they will ever be able to continue their research.
This issue highlights the ongoing challenges in promoting research in tribal languages and underlines the need for stronger academic support and infrastructure in regional languages at the university.
