Jamshedpur, June 26: Tata Steel has achieved a major milestone in sustainable construction by developing an innovative green concrete using manufactured sand (M-sand) produced from LD (Linz-Donawitz) slag, a by-product generated during the steelmaking process. The initiative promotes the circular economy by converting industrial waste into a valuable construction material.

The Industrial By-Products Management Division (IBMD) of Tata Steel developed the LD slag-based M-sand to address the long-standing challenge of utilizing steelmaking slag. A cross-functional team from Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL evaluated its suitability for concrete production and successfully designed concrete mixes for M15, M20, and M25 grades in accordance with Indian Standards IS 10262 and IS 456.

Each cubic metre of the newly developed concrete uses nearly one tonne of LD slag-based M-sand, significantly reducing dependence on natural sand and lowering the carbon footprint of conventional concrete.
The green concrete has demonstrated excellent performance, including strong cohesiveness, good pumpability, and workability retention for up to two hours. Laboratory testing and on-site validation have produced satisfactory results, confirming its suitability for practical construction applications and reinforcing Tata Steel’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible innovation.
