17 students stranded in Ukraine reach Ranchi Airport, MEA shares helpline numbers with Jharkhand

Hemant urges PM, MEA to ensure no more Indian life is lost in Ukraine conflict

Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday condoled the death of an Indian student in Ukraine’s Kharkiv because of shelling in the area this morning.

In a tweet on Tuesday tagging Prime Minister and Union external affairs ministry, Soren said that every Indian’s life is precious and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure that no more lives are lost in this conflict. Soren, in a tweet, said, “I am deeply saddened to hear about this unfortunate development. Every Indian citizen’s life is precious and I urge @PMOIndia and @MEAIndia to ensure that no more lives are lost in conflict.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members of the deceased student’s family members,” the chief minister further tweeted.

Earlier in the day, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi shared the information and expressed condolences to the family. “With profound sorrow, we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family,” he wrote in the tweet.

Significantly, Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Sunday sought the Centre’s immediate intervention for the safe return of people who are stranded in strife-torn Ukraine.

In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the chief minister had shared a list of persons from Jharkhand stuck in the crisis-hit country.

The letter read, “Estimated 20,000 Indians including 18,000 students are believed to be stranded in Ukraine. My office is constantly being approached by the relatives of those persons from Jharkhand who are stuck in Ukraine during war times. They are in a state of panic and horror and compelled to move with limited stock of essential provisions to makeshift safety places like underground metro rail lines.

“I feel we must reach out to them in this hour of crisis and make best possible efforts to evacuate them back home.”

Soren requested the Home Minister to instruct officials concerned of the Government of India to make necessary arrangements to facilitate the quick evacuation of Jharkhand students stuck in Ukraine.

“Till such time they could be accommodated in safe places with an adequate supply of essentials,” the letter read.

Due to the efforts of the State and Central government, 17 people trapped in Ukraine reached Jharkhand late on Tuesday evening.  According to the information received from the control room operated under the State government, safe return of the people of Jharkhand trapped in Ukraine is being ensured by establishing constant contact with them. Information is also being shared with the central government to safely bring back people.  Through 134 phone calls received so far in the control room, information about 181 people has been received, out of which 67 are female and 114 are male.
