Jamshedpur, Jan 8: The prevailing cold wave condition has once again prompted shutdown of schools in Jamshedpur.
Jamshedpur reeled under an intense cold wave on Thursday as temperatures dipped sharply, with the city’s minimum temperature hovering around 8 degrees Celsius, prompting authorities to take urgent preventive measures for student safety.
Acting on a weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the District Education Office of East Singhbhum announced the suspension of academic activities in all government, aided, and private schools across the district.
Classes from Nursery to Class XII will remain closed on January 9 and 10, citing concerns over the adverse impact of extreme cold on children’s health.
The administration invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, emphasizing that prolonged exposure to biting cold could pose serious risks, especially for younger students.
While classroom teaching has been halted, schools have been given the discretion to conduct board examinations, if scheduled during the closure period.
Despite the shutdown for students, teachers and non-teaching staff in government schools have been instructed to remain present, mark attendance through the eVV system, and carry out non-academic responsibilities.
Residents across Jamshedpur reported dense morning chill and icy winds, making early travel uncomfortable.
The sudden drop in temperature has also led to a rise in cold-related ailments, particularly among children and the elderly.
Parents welcomed the decision, calling it timely and necessary amid worsening winter conditions.
“It is extremely cold in the mornings, and sending small children to school in such weather is risky. The administration has taken the right step to protect our kids,” said Rakesh Kumar, a parent of a Class III student.
Weather officials have advised people to avoid early morning exposure, wear adequate warm clothing, and take necessary precautions as cold conditions are likely to persist over the next few days.
