Jamshedpur Feb 11: The founder of Anand Marg, Shri-Shri Anandmurti Ji had been administered poison in the name of medicine on February 12, 1973 in Patna’s Bankipur Central Jail, Bihar. Anandmurti Ji was imprisoned during the Indira Gandhi regime on blatantly false accusation of murder of his disciples by him.
His disciples claimed that the founder of Anand Marg sect, Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar was deliberately kept in a small, unhygienic cell and naturally he fell ill. “Anandmurti Ji, whom we call Baba, fell seriously ill and the services of Dr HK Ghosh’s services were requisitioned by the Jailor of Bankipur Central Jail. Dr Ghosh started Anandmurti Ji’s treatment and gradually Baba started recovering. But this rattled the nerves of the Indira regime. Dr HK Ghosh was duly removed and in his place, Dr Rahamatullah Khan was designated to look after Baba. It was but natural that Baba fell ill again because his unrecorded ‘death warrant’ had been issued by the central government. Dr Khan was a stooge of the Indira government and 11 pm of February 12, in the guise of treatment, gave a poison capsule.”
The Anand Marg sect members, whose presence is worldwide, rued the inhuman conditions that the Founder, Anandmurti Ji was meted out with on the false accusation of murdering his disciples. The deliberate and misleading treatment provided him by Dr Rahamatullah Khan on the whims of the Indira government started taking a heavy toll as the sect founder started fainting off and on, suffered immense body aches and unbearable pain in his head. His disciples had also claimed that he was being slow poisoned but through sheer will power and trained mind, Anandmurti Ji survived. Another Anand Margi said, “During his jail term, Baba demanded an inquiry into the use of poison in the name of medication. He wrote to the President and Prime Minister of India as also to the Governor of Bihar but he received no response. His appeal for judicial probe for administering him poison in lieu of medicines was ignored. Baba then informed the government and started a fast in his prison cell in April, 1973. Neither did the government investigate nor did Baba break his fast until five years, four months and two days which only a man with divine realization could undergo. At the end, truth triumphed as the Patna High Court acquitted him of the (false) murder charges. Baba walked out of the prison on August 2, 1978.”
Anand Marg followers universally have resolved to continue their struggle against deliberate sin and to cater to the needs of poor and needy. Each year, on February 12, they revisit their pledge to alleviate wrongs and be of service to mankind.
