U.S. Ship Carrying LPG Reaches India Amid West Asia Crisis

New Delhi: A large cargo ship carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States has arrived at Mangalore Port, providing a vital boost to India’s energy reserves during the ongoing global supply chain crisis.

Strategic Deliveries at Mangalore Port

The Pyxis Pioneer, a cargo vessel transporting LPG from Texas, successfully docked at the port to begin offloading. This arrival follows another significant delivery at Mangalore by the vessel Aqua Titan, which carried Russian crude oil.

Authorities have stationed the Aqua Titan approximately 18 nautical miles from the port. Workers will use a single-point mooring system to transfer the oil into the pipeline network, eventually reaching the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) facility.

Shift in Global Oil Policy

The Russian crude arrived after the United States issued a temporary general license. This policy permitted the sale of Russian oil that remained stranded at sea as of March 12, 2026. The move aims to stabilize global fuel prices as tensions escalate in the Middle East.

Simultaneously, India has sharply increased its purchases of Russian oil. This surge in buying follows a U.S. decision to allow India to temporarily boost imports to manage supply disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the U.S.

Securing the West Coast Supply

India’s west coast has seen a flurry of activity this week to secure energy supplies:

  • The Indian-flagged LPG tanker ‘Nanda Devi’ arrived at Vadinar Port in Gujarat.

  • The tanker ‘Shivalik’ successfully docked at Mundra Port earlier in the week.

Both vessels completed a hazardous passage through the Strait of Hormuz, where the regional conflict has severely disrupted maritime traffic.

Monitoring Seafarer Safety

The Director General of Shipping (DG Shipping) continues to monitor the safety of Indian maritime workers. Currently, 22 Indian-flagged vessels carrying 611 Indian seafarers remain in the western Persian Gulf region. DG Shipping is coordinating closely with ship owners, recruitment agencies, and Indian diplomatic missions to ensure their security.
