Jamshedpur: Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a Nor’wester alert for Jharkhand, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds likely to affect various parts of the state over the next three days. The warning, valid from May 2 to May 4, calls for heightened caution, especially in areas vulnerable to strong winds and lightning strikes.
According to the alert, wind speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph may accompany thunderstorm activity, particularly at isolated locations. While north-western Jharkhand may escape the storm’s impact today, May 2, weather disturbances are expected to spread across most parts of the state by May 3, intensifying further on May 4, when no region is likely to remain unaffected.
The prevailing conditions are being influenced by a north-south trough that extends from an upper air cyclonic circulation located over southeast Rajasthan, stretching all the way to north Kerala. This trough, which runs through West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Interior Karnataka, is currently present up to 1.5 km above mean sea level and is a key driver of the Nor’wester activity.
Adding to the atmospheric instability is an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Bangladesh and its adjoining regions, observed between 3.1 km and 7.6 km above mean sea level. The combined influence of these systems has led to the development of strong convective activity and unsettled weather across Jharkhand.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has urged residents, particularly farmers and outdoor workers, to stay informed through regular weather updates and take all necessary safety precautions. With thunderstorms known to cause damage to standing crops, weak structures, and power lines, timely preparedness can prevent loss of life and property.
“People are advised to remain indoors during storm activity, avoid sheltering under trees, and stay away from open fields during lightning events,” said a spokesperson from the Ranchi Meteorological Centre. The department also emphasized the importance of securing loose outdoor items and preparing for possible disruptions to transport and communication lines in storm-hit areas.
The alert comes at a critical time for farmers, many of whom are in various stages of preparing for the kharif season. Heavy rainfall or hailstorms, if they occur, could delay operations or damage soil structure. Authorities are expected to coordinate with local administrations to ensure emergency support is available in high-risk areas.
Residents in Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Dhanbad, and other major towns are already experiencing hot and humid conditions, which are typical precursors to Nor’wester formations. These brief but intense summer storms are a seasonal phenomenon in eastern India, known for cooling down temperatures but also causing sudden and severe disruptions.
