Jamshedpur, Nov 12: As Jamshedpur votes on November 13, the East assembly seat is likely to witness a triangular contest with three strong candidates vying for victory, intensifying the competition for the seat.
Purnima Das Sahu, daughter-in-law of Odisha Governor and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, is contesting on a BJP ticket. In opposition, Congress has fielded former IPS officer and former Jamshedpur MP Dr Ajoy Kumar.
Adding to the rivalry, Shiv Shankar Singh, a BJP rebel, has entered the race as an independent candidate with the gas oven symbol.
Shiv Shankar Singh’s candidacy has created a challenging situation for both BJP and Congress, attracting support from various voting blocs throughout Jamshedpur East.
His presence has split the traditional BJP votes, which has traditionally given the party a strong foothold in the area. The BJP and Congress have their core voter bases, but Shiv Shankar’s independent run adds a new dynamic that threatens to disrupt conventional loyalties.
This situation recalls the 2019 election, when Saryu Roy, another former BJP leader, won as an independent candidate, defeating BJP’s Raghubar Das. Roy’s victory demonstrated that Jamshedpur East voters were open to alternatives outside the major parties. Roy’s faction has reportedly thrown support behind Shiv Shankar Singh in this election, which may further complicate the three-cornered equation.
In response, BJP leaders have been campaigning aggressively to rally their supporters behind Purnima Das Sahu, aiming to restore the party’s control over the constituency. The BJP had previously dominated this seat, with Raghubar Das securing a win by over 1 lakh votes in 2014. However, the landscape shifted in 2019 when Das lost his re-election bid.
The Jamshedpur East constituency has 3,36,116 registered voters, including 1,66,586 women, 1,69,413 men, and 177 third-gender voters. With such a diverse electorate, turnout could be a deciding factor in the election outcome.
