Jamshedpur, March 16: A theft incident was reported late Sunday night at the Sitla Temple located under the Sakchi police station area , after a man allegedly broke open the temple’s donation box and stole around Rs 4,000.
According to information received, the accused, identified as Hasim, a resident of Old Purulia Road No. 9, reportedly entered the temple premises around 10 pm by climbing up through a solar light pipe installed near the temple.
He allegedly broke open the donation box and took away the cash kept inside.
It is also alleged that Hasim works at a flower shop located in Md. Line in Sakchi.
Locals claimed that he had earlier been involved in stealing a silver crown from the same temple.
The entire incident was captured on the temple’s CCTV cameras. Meanwhile, when local residents heard suspicious noises from the temple premises, they rushed to the spot and managed to catch the accused red-handed.
He was later handed over to the Sakchi police.
On receiving information, the police took the accused into custody and have begun an investigation into the matter.
Police officials said further inquiry is underway to verify the accused’s involvement in previous theft incidents.
