Jamshedpur: As part of the ambitious redevelopment plan for Tatanagar railway station, the Railway Engineering and Land Department has begun measuring shops and houses surrounding the station. On Wednesday, officials measured 37 shops and houses from the station roundabout to Kitadih Trimurti Chowk. The railway will mark its land and submit a detailed report to the Chakradharpur divisional headquarters. Once this process is completed, redevelopment work will begin on the vacated land.
A railway department official stated that the order for land measurement was received from the Chakradharpur division and the process would be completed soon. The final report is expected to be submitted within two days. This follows similar measurements conducted on Tuesday along the main road from Golpahari turn to Engineering Colony. The redevelopment project requires approximately 200 acres of vacant land and the railways have accelerated the process of identifying and clearing the necessary areas. The tender process for the project is expected to be completed in April, with construction set to begin in June. The total cost of the redevelopment is estimated to be around Rs 300 crore.
Under this plan, Tatanagar railway station will be transformed into a modern hub equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including extended platforms, multi-level parking, escalators, elevators, commercial complexes and high-security arrangements. The station will also feature spacious waiting lounges designed to offer passengers a more comfortable travel experience.
Meanwhile, many shopkeepers and house owners have expressed concerns about the possibility of their establishments being demolished. During the measurement process on Wednesday, several individuals attempted to gather information from railway officials. However, the officials clarified that the process was only meant to mark railway-owned land and did not confirm which structures would be affected. Despite these assurances, uncertainty remains among those who fear displacement.
Further land measurement work is scheduled for Thursday along both sides of the main road leading to Baghbeda. The railway authorities plan to vacate marked areas in a phased manner as part of the redevelopment efforts. With the project moving forward rapidly, all eyes are now on the authorities to see how they balance infrastructure development with the concerns of local residents and businesses. (w/nkm)
