Tatanagar railway station is now under third eye

Jamshedpur : The Tatanagar railway station is now well equipped with the 46-odd closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

Railway authorities confirmed this and said that the third eye sueveillance will help in checking crimes and monitoring movement of suspected persons.

Arun Kumar Chaurasia, senior RPF commandant of Chakradharpur division, who is looking after the project, said that all strategic points on the station premises have been brought under 24×7 electronic surveillance as part of a security project that is being implemented by Railway Protection Force (RPF). The hi-tech electronic gadgets were on trial for checking its coverage area and lens capacity for one week or so.

According to him, during a recent training conducted by Calcutta-based firm Honeywell Automation, RPF personnel including assistant sub-inspectors and sub-inspectors learnt the nitty gritties of operating and monitoring the footage recorded by the CCTV cameras.

Sources said that the CCTV cameras had been fixed in such a manner that the entire station except the parking and circulating areas had been brought under surveillance.

Railway officials said that The CCTV cameras have been installed at five platforms, entry/exit points and reservation counters. The entire project cost entailed an investment of around Rs 1.5 crore.

In all 25 CCTV cameras have found perch atop the main station building, entrance, waiting area besides platform Nos. 1, 2 and 3. The highly efficient 5-6 pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras have been put up at the entry, exit points and crowded places like the ticket counters.

Station manager Awtar Singh said CCTV cameras will help railway police manage security better, benefiting both passengers and railway authorities.

Tatanagar station witnesses a daily traffic of over 90 mail, express and passenger trains, besides a footfall of 60,000 passengers.

Railway sources said that CCTV cameras are also being installed at two other railway stations under Chakradharpur division–Rourkela and Chakradharpur. The gadets would start functioning by the end of this month.
