The Rise of Samrat Choudhary: From Political Legacy to Bihar’s CM

Patna (IANS): Following his election as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA, Samrat Choudhary is now poised to become the next Chief Minister of Bihar. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan formally announced the selection during the legislative party meeting. Later, during the NDA meeting, outgoing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar confirmed Choudhary as the new leader of the alliance in the state.

A Political Journey Rooted in Tradition

Samrat Choudhary’s political career stems from a powerful family legacy. His father, Shakuni Chaudhary, was a towering figure in Bihar politics as a multi-term MLA and MP, while his mother, Parvati Devi, served as the MLA for Tarapur.

Key Milestones in His Career:

• 1990: Entered active politics.

• 1999: Served as the Agriculture Minister of Bihar.

• 2000 & 2010: Won the Parbatta assembly constituency elections.

• 2010: Appointed Chief Whip of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

• 2019: Appointed BJP State Vice President under Nityanand Rai.

• 2023: Appointed BJP State President.

The Symbolic “Muraittha” Vow

Choudhary’s political identity became inseparable from a symbolic pledge he made when Nitish Kumar joined the Mahagathbandhan. Serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council at the time, Choudhary vowed not to remove his Muraittha (traditional turban) until he unseated Kumar as Chief Minister.

When Kumar eventually returned to the NDA, Choudhary transitioned into the role of Deputy Chief Minister, notably becoming the first BJP leader to handle the crucial Home Department portfolio.

A New Chapter for Bihar

Choudhary’s rise from regional roles in the RJD and JD(U) to becoming the BJP’s top face reflects a strategic political evolution. As Chief Minister, he will be the central figure for the NDA heading into the 2029 Lok Sabha and 2030 Assembly elections.

His elevation marks a significant shift in Bihar’s governance, signaling the official transition of power from the Nitish Kumar era to a fresh BJP-led leadership.
